生平与创作分期

1875 年生于肯塔基州，做过记者、剧作家与演员，1908 年进入比沃格拉夫公司（Biograph）开始执导短片。在 1908–1913 年间他拍摄了数百部短片，逐步把摄影机从固定视点中解放：特写、中景、全景的分切，镜头之间的平行交替，以及「最后时刻的营救」这一紧张结构，都在这些短片中成形。

1915 年《一个国家的诞生》以南北战争与重建时期为题材，把此前所有技巧整合为一部三小时的长片，确立了电影作为「叙事艺术」的规模与语法，同时因其露骨的白人至上立场与对三 K 党的歌颂引发强烈抗议——这一污点不可分割地属于它。1916 年《党同伐异》以四个时代的平行故事写「不宽容」，因结构过于激进而在商业上失败。

此后他逐渐失去对工业的控制，1920–30 年代的作品与投资接连受挫。1948 年他在好莱坞孤独去世。他的技术遗产与政治污点同时存在，是影史上最无法回避的遗产之一。

他活动在美国电影从「吸引力」走向工业叙事的阶段：制片厂体系形成，长片成为标准，而观众已能接受更复杂的叙事。比沃格拉夫等公司的短周期生产使他得以在数年之内反复试验，这种高强度的实践条件是他技术发现的直接来源。《一个国家的诞生》之后的抗议浪潮也推动了电影审查制度的建立，这是他留下的一体两面的后果。

风格与母题

他的核心命题是「个体命运与历史潮流的交汇」：他的人物总在宏大事件中被推着行动。他反复写「跨越时空的平行」，把不同时代、不同阶层的故事交错剪辑，以论证一个抽象主题。他的签名是「把叙事张力技术化」：他关注的是如何在有限时间内让观众持续紧张与投入。他的局限同样明确：他把种族偏见当作叙事的前提，这使他的作品必须被批判地观看。
